Standard Deckbuilding Guide

Rules for building a tournament-legal deck (valid February 14, 2026)

Pokémon TCG Standard Deckbuilding Guide

Valid as of February 14, 2026

1. Date & Rotation

As of February 14, 2026, Standard format is in a specific transition period:

  • Legal regulation marks: H, I, and J. Cards with these marks in the bottom-left corner are legal.
  • Cards with the G mark were legal until February 5, 2026, but are no longer legal as of February 6, 2026.
  • Cards with F or any earlier letter are not legal in Standard.

2. How to Tell If a Card Is Legal

Primary rule: Look at the regulation mark in the bottom-left corner of the card.

  • Legal: H, I, J
  • Not legal: G (rotated out Feb 6, 2026), F, and any earlier letters

Basic Energy exception: Basic Energy cards are always legal, regardless of their mark or set, and can be used in any quantity (as long as your deck has exactly 60 cards).

3. The Reprint Rule (Using Older Cards)

You may use an older version of a Trainer or Energy card if a card with the exact same name has been printed with a legal regulation mark (H, I, or J).

Examples:

  • "Professor's Research" from an older set (e.g. with a D mark) is legal because a version with a legal mark (I or J) exists.
  • "Boss's Orders" from a Sword & Shield set is legal for the same reason.
  • "Rare Candy" from an old Sun & Moon set is legal because a version with mark "I" exists in a current set.

Commonly used reprints (same-name rule applies): Nest Ball, Poké Ball, Ultra Ball, Switch, Super Rod, Energy Retrieval, Professor's Research, Boss's Orders, Rare Candy, Professor Sada's Vitality, Great Ball, Level Ball, Friends in Hisui, Colress's Experiment, Iono, Arven, Earthen Vessel, Counter Catcher, Technical Machine: Devolution, Pal Pad, and others.

4. Special Promo Cards (Short List)

These specific cards are allowed in Standard even if they do not have a standard H/I/J mark:

  • Pikachu promo (PROMO 002/SV-P)
  • Paradise Resort promo (PROMO SV-P)
  • The seven Ponyta cards from "Jewel Pack Vol. 4" (CBB4_01 01/07 through 07/07)

5. Deck Construction Rules

  • Deck size: Exactly 60 cards. No more, no less.
  • Same name: No more than 4 cards with the same name. This applies to Pokémon, Trainers, and Special Energy.
    • "Marnie's Grimmsnarl" and "Grimmsnarl" count as different names.
    • "Teal Mask Ogerpon ex" and "Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex" are different names.
    • "Raichu" and "Raichu BREAK" are different names (BREAK is part of the name).
    • Pokémon ex (Scarlet & Violet) is not the same as Pokémon-EX (Black & White/XY); they have different names for the 4-card limit.
  • Prism Star: You may only have one copy of each uniquely named Prism Star card in your deck.
  • ACE SPEC: If ACE SPEC cards are legal in the format, you may only have one ACE SPEC card in your deck.

6. Upcoming Rotation Warning

Your deck may be legal on February 14, 2026, but a major rotation is scheduled:

  • In-person play: April 10, 2026
  • Pokémon TCG Live: March 26, 2026

After that rotation, cards with regulation mark H will also leave Standard. Only I, J, and future marks will remain legal.
